Welcome to TheBadNewsB, where art meets rebellion and hope. In 2016, I stood in my living room watching the inauguration and feeling the impeding shift in our country. I had two daughters, a baby and a young child, who would be feeling the effects of this day for many years to come. I didn't know then how much that shift would change everything, our very being as individuals and a society. I began to feel intense emotions and didn't know how to express them in a meaningful way. Ranting to strangers on the internet is not as fulfilling as some may think.
I picked up my pen and started drawing. My first design was about the resistance, "Rise, Shine, Resist." This design would later be featured on TeePublic's Editor's Pick. The second design was a quote about Elizabeth Warren by a man who does not deserve mention, you may remember it. "Nevertheless, She Persisted." More and more I found myself inspired by the people who were standing up for our democracy, standing against the rise of authoritarianism in this country. We could never have predicted then how far and quick that rise would be.
As a woman, I found myself wanting to amplify the voices of feminism, advocacy, the LGBTQAI+ community, science, democracy, marginalized people, and social justice. I started drawing with the intention of releasing hope into the world and giving myself an outlet for my emotional expression and well-being.
As a mother, I found myself wanting a better world for my daughters, nieces, nephews, and the children who are truly the victims of the adults they trust making choices for them. We are a voice for those without one. And we have done them a disservice in the last 8 years.
I hope to share my creative process, design process, book recommendations, personal stories, and more here. I hope you join me in expression and creating art as an act of rebellion and joy.
I am TheBadNewsB. I am an indie artist, project manager, hiker, kayaktivist, knowledge fangirl, and excessive reader, mindfully navigating apocalyptic times with creativity, compassion, and clarity. Welcome to my attempt at making the world more beautiful, one design at a time.
The most recent design in my shop is "Good Trouble Tarot." My sketching started out on June 14, 2025, also known as No Kings Day. Unable to join the protests myself, I found myself inspired by the spirit and great John Lewis.
The future is unknown, but like tarot, protests can be used as a tool to provide insight into the past, present, and potential future. We saw on that day the potential for a resistance that could topple kings. With protests in over 2,000 cities across all 50 states, the sheer numbers in the millions, protesters expressed their concerns about free speech, cutting university and nonprofit funding, ICE raids, and misuse of deploying our military resources bein used against our own citizens were staggering. The 3.5 percent stepped out and spoke in no uncertain terms, we reject this administration's overreach and authoritarian actions.
The protest was the same day as the "military parade" which was also a frivalous expenditure of between $25 and 45 million of the tax payers dollars. And that didn't include the cost of police presence, street repairs from the heavy military vehicles, or the cost of clean up, estimating additional $16 million.
While $60 million dollars would not end childhood hunger as a whole, it could certainly have helped eligible students purchase groceries during the summer. It could have fed 66,000 children breakfast and lunch at school for a full year. The sum could have housed almost 3,000 homeless adults for a full year. The list goes on, there are plenty of issues in this country that could have used the tax funds to help it's citizens instead of throwing a birthday party for a man who feels he should be king.
John Lewis said "Get in good trouble, necessary trouble." He inspired generations to use their voices to actively challenge injustice and advocate for positive change. He told us our freedoms are not a state, they are not given, we must demand them. We have a moral obligation to stand for marginalized people, for those without a voice or vote. Our children do not have the ability to tell their government what they need and want, but we do. "My dear friends: Your vote is precious, almost sacred. It is the most powerful nonviolent tool we have to create a more perfect union." He reminded us that our struggle is on going and lasts a lifetime, which he demonstrated by working as a voice of his people up until the day he died.
Being brave and doing what is right sometimes means getting in the way. We've tried resistance, but now, it's time to disobey and get into some Good Trouble.
